Our technology allows the permanent storage of carbon in sea water in the form of calcium bicarbonate, a compound already present in all waters
The world’s largest facility for storage capacity of CO₂ in calcium bicarbonates in the sea
Inspired by nature
Carbon absorption processes occur naturally and are part of the carbon cycle. They have kept the carbon balance of our atmosphere stable for millennia.
Seas and oceans naturally absorb large amounts of CO₂; making them the main carbon dioxide deposits of our planet. The carbon in the sea is almost entirely (98%) present as bicarbonates.
In the past, the very slow increases of CO₂ in the atmosphere were compensated by hydrosphere water, which assimilates carbon dioxide and neutralizes its acidity thanks to carbonate rocks.
Today’s anthropogenic CO₂ emissions have led to a much faster and greater increase in atmospheric CO₂ compared to the past. The seas and the biosphere can no longer keep pace with this rise, resulting in CO₂ accumulating in the atmosphere and spreading into the seas. This caused an increase of the greenhouse effect and a sharp surge in the acidification of sea water, endangering the entire ecosystem.
Our solution against climate change
Limenet has designed, patented and engineered an innovative technology for carbon storage in the form of bicarbonates.
This technology works like this: using calcium carbonate, seawater and renewable energy, Limenet is able to transform carbon dioxide collected from the atmosphere or other sources into an aqueous solution of calcium bicarbonates with the same natural acidity level of the sea.
This results in a stable and long-lasting CO₂ storage solution within the seas and oceans. This process not only stores CO₂ but, by dissolving the carbonates in the sea water, increases its alkalinity, that is the ability to resist changes in acidity levels, with possible benefits for marine biota.
